VICTORIA – Government has reviewed the Sea-to-Sky land and resource management planning (LRMP) table recommendations and will now be commencing government-to-government consultations with First Nations, Sustainable Resource Management Minister George Abbott announced today.
“Rapid community, economic, and transportation development make land use planning in the Sea-to-Sky corridor a priority,” said Abbott. “During this next phase of the land use planning process we will work to fulfill our commitment of providing leadership to support sustainable development in the region.”
The Province and First Nations consultations will review the recommendations brought forward by the Sea-to-Sky LRMP table. During this period local elected community leaders who were part of the LRMP will also be contacted.
“We realize that there are many issues that
have to be discussed and we are confident they can be addressed through the consultative
process,” said Abbott. “The insight and input that the table has
provided through their recommendations provides us with an excellent starting
point.”
The Sea-to-Sky LRMP area covers approximately 1.1 million hectares north of Greater Vancouver. The Sea-to-Sky highway links numerous First Nations communities, rural communities and the larger communities of Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton within the plan area.
A LRMP is a process for defining a future vision for public land and resources. LRMPs develop broad strategic objectives with an aim to balance the wellbeing of communities, economies and ecosystems. Plans have been approved for more than 70 per cent of British Columbia.
