VERNON – At an unveiling ceremony today, the Okanagan Lake Forest Service recreation site was renamed the Evely Forest Service recreation site in honour of the late Glen Evely.
Evely, a compliance and enforcement technician at the Okanagan Shuswap Forest District, was killed in a car crash near Vernon on Nov.13, 2004. He was serving as a volunteer RCMP officer when a stolen vehicle hit the cruiser he was travelling in. He was a 12-year employee of the Ministry of Forests, having worked in both the Chilcotin and Vernon areas.
The new name is reflected on a sign at the site, located on Westside Road north of Fintry. A granite monument was also unveiled, reading “This site is dedicated to the memory of Glen Evely, who lost his life in service to his community and the Province of British Columbia.”
The renaming of the recreation site pays tribute to Evely’s commitment to public service, both professionally and personally. The site was chosen for its natural beauty and for its proximity to Vernon.
