SURREY – An expanded and updated academic building at Kwantlen University College’s Surrey campus was officially opened today by Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell, providing more classrooms for Kwantlen’s growing number of students.
“Along with adding 1,800 student spaces at Kwantlen University College, we are investing in bigger and better buildings to make room for these seats, and to improve students’ learning environment,” said Coell. “B.C. needs a well-educated population to make the most of our strong knowledge economy, and in fast-growing areas like Surrey, we’re working especially hard to increase access to higher learning.”
Kwantlen University College has received provincial funding for 805 of the 1,800 seats it has been allocated as part of the government’s plan to create 25,000 student spaces at B.C. institutions by 2010. This includes 1,100 new seats at the Surrey campus.
The Province is investing $25.6 million to expand three buildings on the Surrey campus, including $4.4 million for the newly expanded Building D. Together, the projects will increase space for students by more than 40 per cent, or 11,000 square metres. Kwantlen University College is contributing $10.4 million to the campus expansion projects, for a total cost of $36 million.
“The addition to Building D will accommodate and improve access and instructional and academic support for our students,” said Kwantlen University College president Skip Triplett. “Kwantlen’s Surrey campus expansion project exemplifies our commitment to developing educational space that creates an ideal applied learning environment.”
The Building D expansion has added 1,260 square metres of space, including large and small classrooms and academic support space. An estimated 390 students will use the new classrooms. The other two projects, to expand Building C and renovate the library, are expected to be finished in 2007.
The government has invested more than $1 billion in public post-secondary facilities across B.C., and has allocated almost $800 million over the next three years to accommodate further growth.
