PUBLIC SUPPORTS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGE FOR 2007

Results of a public consultation indicate that the vast majority of respondents support the Province’s adopting a change to Daylight Saving Time (DST) beginning in 2007, so that it is in alignment with the United States and much of Canada.

·        4,300 businesses, individuals and other organizations submitted responses

·        92 per cent were in favour of adopting the change

·        Submissions were received via mail and e-mail between Feb. 13 and March 10, 2006

·        Eleven chambers of commerce wrote submissions and supported adopting the change

·        The most common reasons for supporting the change were to be in alignment with the United States and other Canadian provinces, to have an extra hour of daylight in the evening, and to save energy.

Submissions were received from all regions of the province.

Beginning in 2007, DST will start three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and end one week later on the first Sunday of November.  In 2007, the clocks will go forward on March 11 and go back on Nov. 4.  In 2008, the clocks will go forward on March 9 and go back on Nov. 2.  Other provinces that so far have adopted the changed dates include Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

Changes to time are included in the Interpretation Act, which falls under the Ministry of the Attorney General.
