LAND AGREEMENT TO BENEFIT PRINCETON & REGION

VICTORIA – The Province, the Town of Princeton and the Upper Similkameen Indian Band have signed a Statement of Intent to work together to develop a parcel of Crown land for potential residential development, announced Agriculture and Lands Minister Pat Bell.

“This agreement demonstrates government’s commitment to further strengthening our New Relationship with First Nations, and to building strong, economically viable communities throughout the province,” said Bell. “It also furthers one of my ministry’s main goals, to improve access to Crown land.”

The large, undeveloped parcel is just over 28 hectares and is located within the municipality of Princeton. The site has excellent potential for residential development as it is close to year-round outdoor recreation activities such as skiing and hiking.

“This is the type of partnership that exemplifies the whole concept of the New Relationship,” said Chief Rick Holmes of the Upper Similkameen Indian Band. “Here we have the Province, First Nations and the local community working together for a common good. Everyone wins.”

The Upper Similkameen Indian Band first approached the Integrated Land Management Bureau in July about jointly developing the parcel. Upon consultation, the Town of Princeton confirmed they would support the proposal and, by September, all parties met to discuss forming a joint partnership to develop the land.

This is a historic partnership we are embarking on between our three levels of government,” said Princeton Mayor Randy McLean. “This land development initiative will be a great catalyst for future residential development and recreational opportunities in the Similkameen.”

Minister Bell signed the agreement in Victoria while meeting with Mayor McLean and council during the Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual conference. If successful, such a subdivision would greatly enhance the town’s appeal. A ceremony will be held at the end of November for the three partners to formally endorse the project. The land is expected to be ready for development in 2008.
