VICTORIA – Forty-six British Columbia municipalities and 10 regional districts will share in over $700,000 in provincial funding under the Infrastructure Planning Grant Program, Community Services Minister Ida Chong announced today.
“These grants will help communities plan for their future infrastructure needs,” said Chong. “By working with our local government partners we’re better able to develop the sustainable infrastructure necessary to support public health, environmental protection, and help strengthen local economies.”
Today’s announcement follows an earlier $700,000 round of infrastructure planning grants awarded this past August. Another round of grant announcements is scheduled for early 2007.
The Infrastructure Planning Grant Program offers grants up to $10,000 to
help local government plan, design and manage water, sewer, drainage and
transportation infrastructure. Ten of
today’s grants also directly support the province’s energy plan by including
projects ranging from community energy planning to assessing the feasibility of
non-polluting energy sources.
Infrastructure planning grants are in addition to
Small Community grants that help small and medium-sized municipalities fund
basic services to residents, and the Regional District grants that help fund
basic administration and services to those regional districts with a population
less than 250,000. The province is in the process of doubling the value of these
grant programs by 2009.
The province also
recently officially launched the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, a new
infrastructure program with the government of Canada to provide $102 million in
combined senior government funding over the coming year for communities across
