MINISTERS DISCUSS TRADE, INVESTMENT, LABOUR
MOBILITY |
|
VANCOUVER – Business organizations and stakeholder groups in British Columbia are getting a first-hand look at the groundbreaking British Columbia-Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement from the two ministers in charge.
Hon. Colin Hansen, Minister of
Economic Development for B.C., and Hon. Gary Mar, Minister of International and
Intergovernmental Relations in Alberta, met in Vancouver today to promote and
discuss the agreement’s benefits and implementation with stakeholder groups.
The governments of British Columbia and Alberta have already started work on a number of fronts even before the agreement comes into force on April 1, 2007. Consultations with industry groups, government ministries, regulators, and occupational groups have begun, and both provinces are looking at early results in a number of areas. A mutual recognition agreement is already signed for dental technologists, and other occupational groups have expressed interest in enhancing labour mobility.
The agreement, signed on April 28, 2006, is comprehensive, applying to all government measures, such as legislation, regulations, standards, policies, procedures and guidelines that affect trade, investment and labour mobility. It creates a market of 7.5 million people and Canada’s most open and competitive economy. The agreement will be fully implemented by April 2009.
