VICTORIA – Graduation portfolios will not be a mandatory requirement for next year’s Grade 12 students, Education Minister Shirley Bond announced today. The portfolio was to be mandatory for graduation beginning in 2006/07 as part of the new graduation program.
While it is not a mandatory
requirement for 2006/07, Grade 12 students who complete their portfolio will
have the choice of including their final portfolio mark in their high school
transcript.
Bond has also asked Ministry of Education staff to look at the portfolio program over the next several months to see if it is accomplishing what was intended. During her visits to schools around the province, Bond heard concerns about the graduation portfolios from parents, students, teachers and school trustees.
Earlier this year, the Province
introduced information resources and tools to help students, parents and
teachers with the graduation portfolio. The tools included an e-mail response
site and a
1-800 helpline. There was also a more comprehensive website with more
information and samples of student portfolios, along with a video that
demonstrated the portfolio process and benefits.
Graduation portfolio is a program where teachers work with students to create portfolio evidence in six areas: arts and design, community involvement, career planning, employability skills, information technology and personal health. Beginning in Grade 10, students gather a physical or electronic collection of materials that demonstrate knowledge, skills, and competencies in six areas through the Planning 10 course.
