There are several
different funding supplements available to school districts to account for
unique geographic factors.
Small Community Supplement - This additional funding is provided to school districts when there is a student population of fewer than 250 elementary students within a five-kilometre road distance of the nearest elementary school or fewer than 635 secondary students within a 25- kilometre road distance of the nearest secondary school.
Funding Protection Supplement - This helps prevent districts from experiencing a decline in funding of more than one per cent from the previous year.
Supplement for Enrolment Decline - This supplement helps offset the effects of loss of funding due to declining enrolment.
Rural Factor Supplement - This supplement is to offset costs for districts outside the major urban centres. It takes into account that it costs more to provide goods and services to Fort St. John than it does to Langley, for example.
Climate Factor Supplement - This supplement is to assist districts that have added energy costs due to extreme heat or cold outside temperatures.
Low Enrolment Factor Supplement - This supplement recognizes that smaller districts have proportionately higher operating costs because of the small student populations.
Sparseness Index Factor Supplement - This supplement addresses the fact that certain districts have a greater financial burden to provide educational services than others resulting from a great distance between the board office and schools. For example, some districts have a great deal of travel time for itinerant and specialist teachers and board personnel to travel from the school board office to a school.
