VICTORIA – Community agencies throughout B.C. that provide hands-on cooking and nutritional skill-building programs for adults and families living with limited incomes can now apply to the Directorate of Agencies for School Health (DASH) for a one-time funding grant, Employment and Income Assistance Minister Claude Richmond announced today.
Eligible not-for-profit agencies can request up to $1000 for one-time expenses such as kitchen equipment (including fridges, freezers, storage bins, pots and pans) or teaching and learning resources for skill-building activities such as cooking, shopping, meal planning, budgeting and food safety.
“I encourage agencies throughout the province to contact DASH directly and take advantage of this funding,” said Richmond. “By supporting agencies that provide hands-on cooking experiences, we are providing our most vulnerable citizens with a great way to learn how to improve their food preparation skills and live healthier lives.”
Helping low-income adults and families improve their cooking skills and nutrition knowledge supports ActNow BC, an integrated, cross-government, partnership-based approach that helps British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices by reducing tobacco use, eating nutritious foods, being more physically active, and making healthy choices during pregnancy.
“Since receiving the money in the spring of this year, we’ve developed an inventory of existing agencies throughout the province that have programs related to healthy eating, but we also want others to know of this opportunity,” said Kathy Cassels, executive director of DASH.
For more information about how to apply for this funding, Ms. Cassels can be contacted directly by phone at (604) 583-6047, by fax at (604) 583-1139 or by e-mail at info@dashbc.org.
Community agencies are being funded from a $275,000 grant provided from the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance to DASH in March 2006.
