VICTORIA – The tutors at Thompson Rivers University,
represented by the British Columbia Open University Faculty Association
(BCOUFA), have reached agreement with the Kamloops university on a six-year
deal, Finance Minister Carole Taylor announced today.
“I am
very pleased to announce this nineteenth agreement within the financial
envelope of the negotiating framework,” said Taylor. “The last contract for the
BCOUFA tutors expired in 2004, and this new agreement covers the period April
1, 2004 to March 31, 2010.
Government
will refrain from discussing the details of this agreement while the parties
complete a ratification vote.
“Thompson Rivers University
tutors are responsible for the delivery of distance and web-based education at
TRU Open Learning,” said Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell. “This form
of lecture allows students to continue their post-secondary education from a
distance, at their own pace and during a time that best suits their learning
needs.”
More than 100 employees and
the university board of directors will vote on the ratification this week.
In November 2005, the
government announced its new negotiating framework, which allocates up to $6
billion over five years for public sector compensation increases. This includes
up to $1 billion in incentives to reach agreements before contracts expire,
$4.7 billion over four years for annual compensation increases, and up to $300
million for agreements that extend to April 2010, contingent on the surplus
that year exceeding $150 million.
The negotiating framework replaces the
previous ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach with a more flexible, creative approach
that allows parties to find the right fit for their unique sectors.
