VICTORIA – A new intermediate salvage licence is being tested by the Ministry of Forests and Range to help recover optimum value from mountain pine beetle timber in the northern and southern Interior, Forests and Range Minister Rich Coleman announced today.
The mid-sized tenure carries a maximum volume of 5,000 cubic metres and will be available through a one-year pilot project in six forest districts: Kamloops, Cascades, 100 Mile House, Prince George, Vanderhoof and Fort St. James.
The new licence was created to recover medium-sized patches of wind-damaged, dead or beetle-attacked trees that aren’t being harvested by major logging companies. Licences will be competitively awarded and include silviculture requirements.
Between 12 and 15 of the new licences are expected to be awarded over the coming year, creating new salvage opportunities for small companies. If test sales prove successful, the pilot may be expanded through amendments to the Forest Act.
Other opportunities available to small-scale salvagers include fuel management, clearing under transmission lines, the ongoing Small Scale Salvage Program and small volume sales tendered by BC Timber Sales.
