VICTORIA – The Network BC project has received international recognition for its use of information technology to benefit society, Labour and Citizens’ Services Minister Mike de Jong announced today. Network BC was named a Laureate of the Computerworld Honours Program and a finalist for the program’s 21st Century Achievement Award at a ceremony on June 5, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
“We committed to bridging the digital divide, and Network BC’s efforts to improve access to broadband Internet are opening up a world of opportunities for those who live and work in our rural and remote communities,” said de Jong. “Receiving this international recognition serves to reinforce the importance of Network BC’s work throughout the province.”
Network BC’s Laureate, in the Government and Non-Profit Organizations category, was accepted by Port Moody-Westwood MLA Iain Black, who represented the Province at Monday’s ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Network BC joined the New York City Police Department, Amber Alert, Network for Good, and U.S. Air Force as finalists for the category’s 21st Century Achievement Award.
“Each laureate selected for this honour understands the importance of using one’s resources and technical prowess to benefit one’s fellow man,” said Bob Carrigan, chairman of the Computerworld Honours Program Chairman’s Committee and president of IDG Communications. “We are proud to provide a platform to publicly acknowledge these contributions.”
Network BC’s case study will become part of the Computerworld Honours archives, available to researchers, scholars and students online and in over 100 universities, museums and research institutions throughout the world.
Founded by International Data Group in 1988, the Computerworld Honours
Program is governed by the not-for-profit Computerworld Information Technology
Awards Foundation. In its 18th year, Computerworld Honours is the
longest-running global program to honour individuals and organizations using
