VICTORIA – Labour and Citizens’ Services Minister Olga Ilich joined with the De Patie and Crellin families today to announce a mandatory pre-payment system at service stations in urban areas will be implemented to help protect employees who work late at night.
“I commend the dedication of the De Patie and Crellin families in ensuring something positive comes out of the senseless death of their son and grandson, gas station attendant Grant De Patie in March 2005,” said Ilich. “This change will help to protect gas station workers and give them a sense of added security.”
The regulation will make a pre-payment system mandatory in urban area service stations in the late night and early morning hours.
“We’re satisfied with what the government has decided, and our family will continue to work on this initiative to ensure that no other worker ever has to make the choice that our son made that night,” said Doug De Patie.
“I’m pleased to see the government has listened to our concerns and taken this action,” said Chett Crellin, grandfather of Grant De Patie.
Government is also calling on WorkSafeBC to accelerate plans for regulations that specifically address the orientation and training needs of new workers, including those at service stations. This will ensure that every new worker and returning worker is given health and safety orientation and training specific to their workplace.
“We are constantly striving to ensure safe workplaces for all workers,” Ilich added. “The pre-payment law combined with new training and education for service station workers is a positive step towards that goal.”
