SPECIAL ADVISOR FOR LABOUR BARGAINING NAMED

VICTORIA – The Office of the Premier has retained Lee Doney as Special Advisor, Labour Bargaining.

Reporting to the deputy minister to the Premier, the special advisor will assist the government as it begins a series of negotiations to reach labour contract agreements covering 90 per cent of public sector workers.

Doney’s assignment is part of a plan that focuses additional resources to facilitate bargaining under province’s new Negotiating Framework. Other steps include the addition of two new analysts at the Public Sector Employers’ Council and the deployment of audit staff in the Ministry of Finance. These initiatives will expedite the review of bargaining proposals and contract costing.

Doney comes to the position with more than 30 years experience in the B.C. public service, including 15 years as a deputy minister. He served as deputy in the Ministry of Forests and, prior to his retirement in 2004, as deputy in the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour.  Doney also served as the CEO of Forest Renewal BC, the CEO of the B.C. Labour Force Development Board, and as the interim chair of the Industry Training and Apprenticeship Commission.

Collective agreements for approximately 270,000 public sector employees are up for renegotiation over the next eight months, with most set to expire prior to March 31, 2006.
