KITIMAT – The Province is providing $200,000 toward a study looking at the benefits and feasibility of establishing a break-bulk port in Kitimat, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.
The funding will assist the Kitamaat Port Development Society in undertaking a four-phase study of opportunities relating to creation of a break-bulk facility that would transport lumber, pulp and paper, wood pellets and other bulk products not shipped via containers.
“The North Coast of British Columbia is in a unique geographic position, which makes transporting goods to the resource-hungry Asia-Pacific region faster than anywhere else on the continent,” said Campbell. “We need to explore every possible opportunity for taking advantage of this geography, and this study will go a long way towards helping us do that.”
An earlier consultant’s report indicates there is an opportunity to develop the facility in Kitimat. The funding for the multi-phase study will outline markets, determine long-term prospects, identify revenue sources and examine capital investment needs.
“With the proposed pipeline development, the future holds tremendous opportunities for Kitimat,” added Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen. “Depending on the outcome of the study, the break-bulk port facility could be another great economic development opportunity that will benefit the entire region.”
The Ministry of Economic Development is the lead on the provincial
portion of funding for the $774,000 study.
