$29.7 MILLION FOR CARIBOO ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

VICTORIA – Provincial roads and highways in the Cariboo are being upgraded as part of the $29.7 million that is being invested in local transportation projects this year, announced Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon today.

“Safe and efficient transportation routes are vital to the province’s economy and to the communities they serve,” said Falcon. “That’s why we are committed to our three year, $2.3-billion transportation investment plan to support economic growth throughout the province.”

The projects underway this summer include safety improvements, resurfacing, realignment and reconstruction throughout the region (see attached background for details of the specific projects).

Also included in the list of projects are infrastructure improvements to local roads affected by the increasing number of logging trucks carrying pine beetle killed wood. The government has committed $90 million over three years for mountain pine beetle road rehabilitation.

“This investment in the Cariboo recognizes the importance of good roads to our thriving regional economy,” said Falcon. “It’s important to note that, of our total spending, more than two-thirds is devoted to projects outside of the Lower Mainland.”

The funding in the region is not only being provided for road improvements, money has also been provided to the City of Quesnel for its Campus Connector cycling trail as part of the Cycling Infrastructure Partnership Program. The trail is a combination shoulder bikeway and a separated bicycle path to provide access to the new college campus and to link the south end of Quesnel by means of trails separated from Highway 97.
