NANAIMO
– Vancouver resident Dr. Harold
Kalman has received the British Columbia Heritage Award for 2006. The award was
presented to Dr. Kalman at the annual Heritage Society of B.C. awards ceremony
last night in Nanaimo.
The
provincial government presents the B.C. Heritage Award every year to a British
Columbian who has made an outstanding long-term contribution to heritage. A
$10,000 grant is also provided to a heritage-related non-profit organization
selected by the award recipient. Dr. Kalman’s selection is the Cultural
Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria.
Dr.
Kalman has been a leader in heritage conservation in British Columbia for over
35 years. After receiving a PhD from Princeton University, Kalman taught the
history of art and architecture at UBC until 1975, when he left to become
Canada’s first private-sector heritage consultant. His firm, Commonwealth
Historic Resource Management Limited, is known and respected nationally and
internationally.
Dr.
Kalman has written widely on the subject of architectural history, his most
notable work being the two-volume landmark 1994 publication, A History of
Canadian Architecture. As the author of this and several other books and
articles on architecture and heritage conservation, Dr. Kalman has made an
exceptional contribution to public awareness of our architectural history and
the importance of conservation.
In
addition to his career as a scholar, consultant and author, Dr. Kalman has been
a strong heritage advocate and volunteer for many years. He was active in the
drive to protect Vancouver’s Gastown and Chinatown in the late ‘60s and later
served on the first Historic Area Advisory board for both districts. He was a
leading figure in the successful struggle to preserve Vancouver’s Christ Church
Cathedral.
Dr.
Kalman was the founding president of the Canadian Association of Professional
Heritage Consultants and is the founding president of the newly formed B.C.
Association of Heritage Professionals. He was on Vancouver’s first Heritage
Advisory Committee and chaired the later Heritage Commission. In addition, Dr.
Kalman has served on the boards of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, the Association
for Preservation Technology, the Canadian National Committee of the
International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Canada), the Pacific
Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, and he is the
past B.C. Governor for the Heritage Canada Foundation.
Dr.
Kalman continues to be involved in heritage and cultural planning and heritage
conservation design, currently working as a conservation consultant for the
Woodward’s project in Vancouver.
