LOCAL FIRST NATIONS MANAGE BIG SPRINGS
RECREATION AREA |

CRANBROOK – The Big Springs recreation area located on Lake Koocanusa near Grasmere, formerly managed by the Province, is now under the management of the Tobacco Plains Indian Band.
A permit to manage the site for public camping and day use has been issued by the Integrated Land Management Bureau to the Tobacco Plains Indian Band Development Corporation. The Tobacco Plains Indian Band is part of the Ktunaxa Nation.
Management of the site will allow the protection of cultural and heritage values of the First Nations and continue to provide an area for public recreation activities. It will also enhance public safety, maintain recreational experiences and protect the environment.
In the past, the recreation site has been damaged by some careless users. The permit will allow the Tobacco Plains Indian Band to manage the activities of users and take necessary action to prevent the destructive use of Crown land by campers and day users. The band will work in co-operation with local police to address any problems that may arise.
As we head into one of the busiest long weekends of the year, outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Big Springs recreation area are asked to please obey the rules and regulations established by the Tobacco Plains Indian Band Development Corporation. Have a safe Canada Day long weekend.
