PROVINCIAL FUNDS IMPROVE WATER QUALITY IN CANAL FLATS

CANAL FLATS – A $400,000 grant from the provincial government’s Towns for Tomorrow program will greatly improve drinking water quality for Canal Flats residents, Community Services Minister Ida Chong announced today.

“Through Towns for Tomorrow, our government is providing B.C.’s smaller communities, like Canal Flats, with the means necessary to act on their capital infrastructure priorities, said Chong. “By supporting these projects, we’re working to reduce greenhouse gases, improve air and water quality and improve energy conservation.”

This funding will allow Canal Flats to create a unified drinking water system and improve water quality for 138 residents and Canal Flats Provincial Park. The Eagle’s Nest drinking water system will be connected to the Village’s drinking water system, removing a long-term boil water advisory. Upgrades include the construction of a new groundwater well, a reservoir, a water treatment plant, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and associated water pipelines.

“A boil water advisory has been in place for the Eagle’s Nest water system since 2003,” said Mayor John Tilley. “The funding from the Towns for Tomorrow program will go a long way to provide accessible and clean drinking water to our residents. An adequate source of clean water is vital for the health and safety of residents of the area and visitors to the provincial park. It is also a very good investment for both the Province and the Village, one that will pay strong dividends for years.”

The Towns for Tomorrow program is providing $21 million, over three years, to assist communities with a population of 5,000 or less with community infrastructure improvements. Under the program’s cost-sharing formula, the Province will provide up to 80 per cent of eligible costs for projects up to $500,000.

Towns for Tomorrow is one of four programs announced by Premier Gordon Campbell at the 2006 Union of BC Municipalities convention, aimed at making B.C. communities greener and healthier places to live. The other programs are LocalMotion, B.C. Spirit Squares and the Green City Awards.
