PROVINCE FUNDS LARGER, GREENER CHILD CARE CENTRE

UCLUELET – Ucluelet will see the construction of a licensed not-for-profit child care facility thanks to $390,000 in funding from the provincial government’s Towns for Tomorrow program, helping make British Columbia’s smaller communities even greener, healthier, more sustainable places to live, Minister of Community Services Ida Chong announced.

“I’m pleased to announce that through our Towns for Tomorrow program, our government is providing funds for a new truly sustainable ‘green’ Child Care Centre for Ucluelet,” said Chong. “We’re pleased to support the development of this facility, ensuring Ucluelet remains a healthy, vibrant community for years to come.

Funds provided to the District of Ucluelet will build a Child Care Centre offering infant and toddler care, group care, and out-of-school care to approximately 34 children. The child care centre will be a fundamental component of an Integrated Community Hub for Ucluelet and surrounding area. This hub will provide seamless access to the entire web of services in the community that strengthen families and promote child development.

“We are thankful to the Premier for supporting this much needed facility,” said Dianne St. Jacques, mayor of Ucluelet. “This new centre will address the community's needs now and into the future and is also a key piece of the social infrastructure required to support our international, award winning status as a  sustainable, liveable community.”

“I’m extremely pleased that we are able to provide funds for such an important child care resource,” said Linda Reid, Minister of State for Child Care. “The B.C. government is committed to providing sustainable child care in order that families can choose from a range of affordable, safe, quality child care options.”

The Towns for Tomorrow program is providing $21 million, over three years, to assist communities with a population of 5,000 or less with community infrastructure improvements. Under the program’s cost sharing formula, the Province will provide up to 80 per cent of eligible costs, for projects up to $500,000.

Towns for Tomorrow is one of four programs announced by Premier Gordon Campbell at the 2006 Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, aimed at making B.C. communities greener and healthier places to live. The other programs are LocalMotion, B.C. Spirit Squares and the Green City Awards.  For more information about Towns for Tomorrow, and for links to these other programs, visit www.townsfortomorrow.gov.bc.ca.
