B.C. REPRESENTATIVE TO JAPAN SELECTED

VICTORIA – The Province has chosen a representative to get the message out in Japan that B.C. is a global magnet for investment, talent and tourism.

“We are fulfilling our commitment to promote British Columbia in key Asian markets,” said Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen. “Avrom Salsberg is fluent in Japanese and has a proven track record in program and business development in the Japan market. I have confidence that B.C.’s interests will be well-served by his efforts.”

Avrom Salsberg was previously a trade commissioner at the Canadian Embassy in Japan, focusing in the technology sector. He has a strong network of science and technology-based contacts in Japan, including representatives from government, universities, research institutes, and key research and development related companies.

Mr. Salsberg started his duties officially on July 1 in Tokyo. The Province now has two trade and investment representatives in Asia. B.C.’s Asia representatives will play an important role in helping implement the Province’s Asia Pacific Initiative.

British Columbia’s trade and investment representatives help promote British Columbia in international markets in a number of ways:

·    conduct corporate calls to present the business case for locating in British Columbia and generate investment leads;

·    deliver seminars or presentations on the merits of establishing a presence in British Columbia;

·    identify target partners or key clients for B.C. industries;

·    gather strategic marketing intelligence and information; and

·    support in-bound and out-bound trade and investment initiatives.

British Columbia Representatives are selected on the basis of a number of criteria, including relevant language skills, sector-specific knowledge, and an established network of commercial contacts in their geographic markets.
