VICTORIA – The unemployment rate in British Columbia fell to 3.9 per cent in March, reaching a 31-year record low for the third straight month.
“These unprecedented employment levels reflect the strength of British Columbia’s growing economy,” said Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon. “Since December 2001, we have led the country in the rate of job growth and have created new investment and employment opportunities in communities throughout the province.”
British Columbia created 12,500 jobs in March, bringing the total number of new jobs since December 2006 to 46,900. B.C.’s employment rate was 63.8 per cent last month, the highest level in three decades.
Since December 2001, British Columbia has created 371,400 jobs and the unemployment rate has fallen 6.1 percentage points. During this period, employment in British Columbia has increased by 19.6 per cent, the fastest growth rate among provinces.
In March, the strongest employment gains were made in B.C.’s manufacturing and service sectors.
