ECO-FRIENDLY GROUP HOME FOR SENIORS OPENS IN VICTORIA

VICTORIA – A new $650,000 five-bed residential facility designed for seniors with disabilities has opened in Victoria. It is the first eco-friendly designed group home built on Vancouver Island.

“The new group home in Victoria ensures B.C.’s most vulnerable citizens receive priority for assistance, and has been built to incorporate sustainable design components,” said Ida Chong, Minister responsible for Seniors. “Homes like this demonstrate the Province’s commitment to meet seniors’ diverse housing and individual health needs, key recommendations of the Premier’s Council on Aging and Seniors’ Issues in its Aging Well in British Columbia report.”

The project was made possible through funding from the provincial government and Community Living BC – the Crown agency that delivers support and services to people with physical and developmental disabilities and their families in British Columbia.

The group home was designed and built for seniors with a broad range of disabilities. Support services for the residents include relationship-building skills, life-skills training, meal preparation, personal care, and access to community resources, activities and services.

“One of Community Living BC’s goals is to help people with disabilities find homes that suit their needs, wants and dreams,” said Lois Hollstedt, Community Living BC board chair. “By partnering with the provincial government, we have been able to access technical expertise that has made this project a success from the beginning stages to completion.”

The home, operated by Integra Support Services, is the first group home on Vancouver Island built to the Energuide 80 level of energy efficiency. Energuide 80 is the target for energy performance adopted by the province for new small residential buildings. It is one of four energy efficient group homes constructed to Energuide 80 standards in the last year. The others are in Chilliwack, Langley and Surrey.
