KAMLOOPS – Tolko Industries’ allowable annual cut under its innovative forestry practices agreement has been increased by 35,000 cubic metres to 422,890 cubic metres until Aug. 31, 2011, in part to allow harvests of mountain pine beetle attacked stands with lower volumes of timber.
The Southern Interior Forest Regional Manager determined that an increase of 25,000 cubic metres per year in the Williams Lake timber supply area and 10,000 cubic metres per year in the 100 Mile House timber supply area be awarded after reviewing the company’s application, timber supply analysis and forecasts, and considering public and First Nations input.
The
innovative forestry practices agreement covers 610,810 hectares and is largely
comprised of lodgepole pine and Douglas fir. In its submission to the regional
manager, the company proposes offering harvesting
opportunities to First Nations with traditional territories within the
agreement area and focusing harvesting in mountain
pine beetle attacked stands. The company must provide a new forestry
plan by January 2008 to the Southern Interior Forest Region Manager and report
on the commitment to offer increases in the cut to First Nations.
Under the Forest Act, the regional
manager can award an increase to the allowable annual cut of an innovative
forestry practices agreement-holder. Licence holders must
comply with conditions of the increase, the agreement, the Forest Act, the
Forest and Range Practices Act and other relevant legislation. Under an innovative forestry practices agreement,
the licensee conducts activities above their basic obligations of forest
management with a view to improving timber productivity.
