SECOND REPORT ON STATE OF FORESTS RELEASED

VICTORIA – The second in a series of reports that objectively measures and assesses the state of British Columbia’s forests, with a focus on sustainability, was released today by the Ministry of Forests and Range.

The State of British Columbia’s Forests provides statistical information about the condition and management of B.C.’s forests, and their support of the province’s economy and communities. The report also provides the ministry’s assessment of the sustainability of B.C.’s forests.

The report provides detailed information using text and charts on 12 indicators of sustainability that cover environmental, economic and social, and governance and support aspects of forests and forest management. These indicators are based on nationally and internationally accepted indicators and include, for example, species diversity, ownership and management, and jobs and communities.

This second edition of the report also provides updates on some indicators published in the first, 2004 edition. For example, figures relating to the timber supply forecast have been updated to reflect the impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic, and the opportunities for First Nations involvement have been updated to reflect new agreements that provide access to timber and a share of forestry revenues.

The report is available electronically through the Ministry of Forests and Range website under the heading “popular topics” at www.for.gov.bc.ca/.
