PREMIER’S STATEMENT ON TEAM BC AT THE CANADA GAMES

VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell issued the following statement in support of Team BC at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon:

“I want to wish the more than 260 athletes on Team BC good luck as they prepare to compete in 22 sports at the Canada Winter Games over the next two weeks. I look forward to celebrating their success and achievements at the first games held north of the 60th parallel.

“The accomplishments of B.C.’s young athletes remind us all of what we can achieve when we set out to do our best. For many of these athletes, the Canada Games are one more step toward achieving their Olympic and Paralympic dreams. Their accomplishments in Whitehorse could propel them to the podium in Vancouver or Whistler in 2010.

“The Team BC program is about more than supporting B.C.’s best athletes – it’s also about building excellence in individuals. All of these athletes are building leadership skills that they can use both in their sport and in their communities.

“I also want to congratulate Vancouver’s Toby Ng and Alvin Lau for having the honour of being named B.C.’s flag bearers and the co-captains of our strong team. Finally, a special thank you to all the coaches, officials, mission staff and volunteers whose tireless efforts make these games happen for the our athletes. Due to their spirit, drive and enthusiasm, I’m certain Team BC will have their best Canada Games ever.”
