VICTORIA – Today the provincial government celebrated British Columbia’s francophone community with the proclamation of la Journée de la Francophonie (Francophone Day) at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria.
The celebration focused on provincial and municipal collaboration and the economic development opportunities generated by the B.C. francophone community for the benefit of the province as a whole.
“Linguistic duality is a
fundamental Canadian value, and today British Columbia recognized the important
contribution our francophone community makes to our Canadian cultural, social
and economic fabric,” said John van Dongen, Minster of State for Intergovernmental
Relations.
The celebration showcased the collaborative work of British Columbia municipalities with their respective francophone and business communities in order to strategically position B.C. on the national and international scene before, during and after the 2010 Olympics and Paralympics Games.
“Today we are celebrating new partnerships and milestones in the history of the francophone community, of our cities and our province,” said Michelle Rakotonaivo, president of the BC Francophone Federation. “Francophones are now playing a recognized, valued and measurable part in the social and economic development of the communities they live in.”
British Columbia is a member of the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie, which strives, among other objectives, to strengthen intergovernmental co-operation on Francophonie issues to promote further usage and greater visibility of the French culture and language throughout Canada.
There are approximately 275,000 people who speak French in British Columbia, and approximately 63,000 for whom French is their first language. B.C. parents continue to embrace official languages and bilingualism. For the sixth consecutive year, enrolment rates in both the Conseil Scolaire Francophone and French Immersion have been on the rise, in some cases, in excess of 20 per cent per year.

Aujourd’hui, le gouvernement provincial a célébré la contribution de la communauté
francophone britanno-colombienne en proclamant la tenue de la Journée de la
francophonie (Francophone Day). L’annonce a eu lieu aux Édifices de l’assemblée
législative, à Victoria.
Cette célébration a mis l’accent sur la collaboration provinciale et
municipale et les possibilités de développement économique générées par la
communauté francophone de Colombie-Britannique
pour le bénéfice de la province.
« La dualité linguistique est une valeur fondamentale canadienne et,
aujourd’hui, la Colombie-Britannique reconnaît l’importante contribution de la
communauté francophone au tissu culturel, social et économique canadien », a
fait valoir M. John van Dongen, ministre d’État des Relations
intergouvernementales.
La célébration a mis en vedette le travail de collaboration entre les
municipalités de la Colombie-Britannique, la communauté et le secteur privé,
afin de positionner stratégiquement la Colombie-Britannique sur le marché
national et international, avant,
pendant et après les Jeux olympiques et paralympiques d’hiver de 2010.
« Nous célébrons aujourd’hui de nouveaux partenariats et un pas
important dans l’histoire de la communauté francophone, de nos villes et de
notre province » a déclaré Mme Michelle Rakotonaivo, présidente de la
Fédération francophone de la Colombie-Britannique. « Les francophones
jouent un rôle valable, mesurable et maintenant reconnu dans le développement
social et économique des communautés où ils vivent ».
La Colombie-Britannique est membre de la Conférence ministérielle sur la
francophonie canadienne qui, parmi ses objectifs, s’efforce de renforcer la
coopération intergouvernementale en matière de francophonie et de promouvoir un
plus grand usage et une plus grande visibilité de la culture et de la langue
française partout au Canada.
On compte environ 275 000 personnes parlant français en
Colombie-Britannique et environ 63 000 personnes dont le français est la
langue maternelle. Les parents de la Colombie-Britannique continuent d’adhérer
aux principes des langues officielles et du bilinguisme. Pour la sixième année
consécutive, les taux d’inscription au Conseil scolaire francophone et aux
programmes d’immersion française sont en hausse. Dans certains cas, cette
augmentation a dépassé 20 % par an.
