The ActNow BC Leadership Council will assist in meeting the ActNow BC targets of increased physical activity, improved eating habits, elimination of tobacco use and ensuring healthy pregnancies with the objective to help British Columbians understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.
Dr. Evan Adams
Evan Adams of the Sliammon First Nation from Powell River, BC, is an actor and physician whose numerous performances include a starring role in the Emmy-winning TV movie Lost in the Barrans and as Thomas Builds-The-Fire in the Miramax feature Smoke Signals, which won him many awards including an Independent Spirit Award for performance in 1999. Dr. Adams completed his MD at the University of Calgary, his Aboriginal Family Practice residency at St Paul’s Hospital, as Chief Resident, and is currently the Director of the Division of Aboriginal People’s Health, UBC Department of Family Practice. He is also the Aboriginal Health Physician Advisor with the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, B.C. Ministry of Health.
John Bishop
British born John Bishop, who has been cooking since his early teens, attended hotel school in Wales and served his apprenticeship at a private London club. After ten years as chef at a restaurant in Kinsale, County Cork, he came to Canada in 1973, where he continued to pursue his culinary career. In 1985 he launched the Vancouver restaurant that bears his name - Bishop’s - that was an immediate success and continues to garner accolades. The fare at Bishop’s is regional and seasonal. In Chef Bishop’s view, it makes sense to showcase British Columbia’s lush bounty of seafood, organic produce and meats.
Stephanie Cadieux
Stephanie Cadieux is the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the BC Paraplegic Association and Manager of Accessibility for 2010 Legacies Now Society. Living with a spinal cord injury since a car accident at the age of 18, Stephanie has since completed her education in Marketing and Personal Finance. With a passionate belief in support as the key to increasing a person’s capacity to cope with a disability, Stephanie brings a unique perspective to her current role championing and promoting the BCPA’s innovative programs and services. Stephanie is also a member of the Global TV Diversity Advisory Committee and a mentor with the YWCA Connect to Success Program.
Ward Clapham
Ward Clapham is Superintendent with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, recently completing his 25th year of service. He is presently the Team Leader at the Richmond Detachment. For the past 9 years, Ward has been lecturing in the area of Leadership and Community Policing across North America, Europe and Asia and has received numerous awards for his contribution in this field.
Dr. Art Hister
Dr. Art Hister graduated from McGill University in 1970, and moved to Vancouver in 1971. In 1991, Dr. Hister became a full-time “media doctor”. Currently, Dr. Hister hosts the radio call-in show House Calls with Dr. Art Hister on the Corus Radio Network. Dr. Hister is a daily health analyst on the Morning News on Global TV in BC, as well as a daily contributor to CKNW’s The Morning News with Philip Till, the resident health analyst for Up All Night on the BBC, and a health columnist for Global TV’s Noon News and Weekend News Currently, he is the honorary chairman of the BC Alzheimer’s Society annual Walk for Memories, and has recently won a “Volunteer of the Year” Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Satnam Johal
Satnam Johal has been an influential leader for children and teens in building healthier lifestyles and in teaching them the importance of becoming role models for their peers. He created the Hargobind Wrestling Club in Surrey for children of all ages and backgrounds that includes Olympic gold medallist, Daniel Igali, Randeep Sodhi as well as notable B.C., national and international champions. Johal is a full time business man and CEO of Nu Tek Doors Ltd. and is part of the Surrey Mayor’s Legacy of 2010.
Mark J Nairn
Mark Nairn is Co-Chair of the Agrifood Partners in Healthy Eating whose goal, in partnership with ActNow BC, is to promote, support and encourage agri-food industry initiatives and activities that proactively “make the healthy choice the easy choice” for British Columbians, and to provide as many B.C. products as possible to meet their healthy food choices.. He owns a cattle ranch in Williams Lake and owns and manages Beamac Installations Ltd. which services the forestry and mining industries. A current member of the Minister of Small Business and Revenue’s Roundtable on Small Business, Nairn is also past president of the BC Cattlemen’s Association and Vice Chair of the BC Agriculture Council.
Lui Passaglia
Lui Passaglia enters his sixth year as Director of Community Relations
for the BC Lions. Under Passaglia’s
direction the Punt, Pass and Kick, Read Write and Roar!, and Lions in the House
community programs were established. A former outstanding player with the BC
Lions football team, Passaglia retired after the Lions won the Grey Cup in
2000. He spent 25 years with the team, and played in 408 games. A football
legend, he was named a CFL All-Star five times, West Division All-Star ten
times and to the 2004 Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
Jamie Pitblado
Jamie Pitblado is Vice President, Promotions & Community Investment,
for Pacific Newspaper Group Inc., publisher of The Vancouver Sun and The
Province. Jamie is responsible for the overall strategy and direction of the
Promotions Department and its role in promoting and marketing the sale of the
newspapers. Jamie serves on the Board
of Directors of Arts Umbrella, the Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon
Division, the Canucks for Kids Fund, the Campaign Cabinet for the 2007/08
United Way, the organizing committee for the 2007 Mastercard Memorial Cup and
the steering committee for the FIFA U-20 Men’s Soccer World Cup. He has also
served on a variety of other charitable and community projects including the
organizing committee for the 2005 Grey Cup and the 2006 Spirit Bears project.
Peter Robinson
Peter Robinson is the Chief Executive Officer of Mountain Equipment
Co-op, bringing over 30 years of diverse professional experience to Canada’s
largest consumer co-operative and leading outdoor retailer. Robinson began his
career working as a park ranger in wilderness areas throughout British
Columbia, where he was twice decorated for bravery by the Governor General of
Canada. He became CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op in May 2000.
Sandra Stevenson
As a senior sports executive, Sandra Stevenson’s career has straddled the playing field and the boardroom spanning over 40 years of award-winning leadership in sport performance, business and advocacy. Stevenson began as an elite athlete and has won nine national badminton titles. In 1991, Stevenson was tapped to be the Director of Strategy and Communications for Sport BC. She held this post for six years until becoming the President and CEO of the provincial sport federation in 1997. She is currently spearheading the incorporation and development of KidSport™ Canada, the first national children’s charity that is designed to remove the financial obstacles that prevent underprivileged children from playing sport. Stevenson recently received Business in Vancouver’s Influential Women in Business Award (2005).
Faye Wightman
A pioneer of B.C.’s non-profit community, Faye Wightman is the President and CEO of the Vancouver Foundation, Canada’s largest community foundation. Faye joined the Foundation from the University of Victoria, where she served as Vice President, External Relations for two years. As president of the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation she oversaw a 650% increase in revenue during her fourteen year tenure, and led the marketing efforts that saw the Foundation be the first non-profit organization to win the Marketer of the Year award from the B.C. chapter of the American Marketing Association.
Robert McFarlane
Robert McFarlane is Executive Vice-president and Chief
Financial Officer for TELUS in
Vancouver, British Columbia. He has the
responsibility for financial and strategic functions at TELUS supporting more
than 800 people and is a director of various TELUS subsidiaries, vice-chair of
the Business Council of British Columbia and a member of its Economic Policy
Committee. He also serves on the Vancouver Advisory Board of the Salvation
Army, British Columbia Division.
Ralph Sultan
Ralph Sultan is MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano and is an Ad
Hoc Member of the ActNow BC Leadership Council. He is also the chair of the
Legislative Select Standing Committee on Health.
