GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS VITAL PROGRAMS THROUGH GAMING GRANT

VICTORIA – Community gaming grants totalling more than $32 million will support over 1,150 groups working to improve the quality of life in communities across British Columbia, Solicitor General John Les announced today. These include organizations that assist the disadvantaged or distressed, promote health and enhance opportunities for youth.

“We want to build the best system of support in Canada for people with disabilities, special needs, children at risk and seniors, and this funding makes a valuable contribution to that goal,” said Les. “Community gaming grants sustain the crucial work of thousands of volunteers who drive a wide variety of organizations that build strong and accessible communities.”

Organizations receiving funding include the We Can Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Education Society, which is the largest integrated recovery and residential treatment for men in Vancouver, and the Grand Forks Boundary Women’s Coalition, which operates a drop-in centre for women facing poverty issues.

This funding will also enable the Vernon and District Hospice Society to provide counselling to relatives who have loved ones in hospice care. It will also help the Victoria Native Friendship Centre deliver the Echoes of Ancestry program – an invaluable resource for teaching, learning and sharing First Nations culture.

To be eligible for these grants, organizations must be non-profit and volunteer driven. Funds must be used within British Columbia to cover costs essential to the direct delivery of programs that benefit the local community. Human and social services gaming grant applications are accepted each year from Aug. 1 to Nov. 30 and are approved by Feb. 28 of the following year.

Community gaming grants are part of the $143.5 million that approximately 6,300 community organizations will share this year from gaming revenue. This revenue is generated from commercial gaming conducted by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation on behalf of the Province.
