CAPITAL PROJECT GAMING GRANTS SUPPORT CHARITABLE
GROUPS |
|
VICTORIA – More than 60 charities have received over $3.37 million in capital project grants this year, Solicitor General John Les announced today.
“These funds will help improve access for people with disabilities, restore heritage sites, build recreational facilities and provide programs and services to better serve communities across the province,” said Les. “Capital project grants are just part of the $144 million that approximately 6,300 community organizations shared in fiscal 2006/07 from gaming revenues.”
Organizations receiving capital
project grants include the Fanny Bay Community Association, to renovate its 76-year-old hall, which serves as a
venue for local community-driven programs and events; and the Maple
Ridge Friends in Need Food Bank, which will get funds to create more
warehousing, office space and a dedicated volunteer area. Funding has also been
provided to the Kamloops Wildlife Park Society to renovate its conservation
centre to house two classrooms and a nature exchange centre for promoting and
teaching environmental awareness.
Through the ministry’s capital
project grant program, an organization can apply for funds to build a new
facility, or renovate or maintain an existing one. To be eligible for a capital
grant, organizations must be non-profit, benefit local communities and deliver
programs established and maintained by its volunteers. The total cost of the
project must exceed $20,000 and the organization’s contribution must be equal
to – or exceed – the grant funding. The facility must be open to the public
when completed.
Capital project gaming grant applications are accepted each year from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 and grants are approved by March 31 of the following year. Revenue for community gaming grants is generated from commercial gaming conducted by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation on behalf of the Province.
