VANCOUVER
– Government and the small business
community have partnered to develop an action plan to support small business
growth and achieve the goal of making British Columbia Canada’s most
small-business-friendly jurisdiction, Small Business and Revenue Minister Rick
Thorpe announced today.
“The success of the small business sector is vital to
British Columbia’s economic growth and the Action Plan for Small Business is another
step forward to ensure this growth continues,” said Thorpe. “The action plan is
a result of recommendations from Small Business Roundtable consultations with
small business owners in all regions of the province, and the Small Business
Roundtable’s first-year annual report to government.”
“Business
in British Columbia is booming and the action plan will help businesses stay
competitive by addressing the priorities identified by and important to small
business,” said John Winter, president and CEO of the British Columbia Chamber
of Commerce. “The Action Plan for Small Business demonstrates what can be
achieved when government and small business work together.”
“Small
business owners face unique challenges, and the action plan responds to these
issues,” said Linda Larson, vice-chair of the Small Business Roundtable. “The
development of the Action Plan for Small Business shows that government is
listening to small businesses in British Columbia.”
The
Action Plan for Small Business focuses action in five areas:
o
Supporting and growing
small business
o
Breaking down barriers
to business
o
Building workforce
capacity
o
Leveraging public and
private partnerships
o
Supporting a competitive
tax structure
October
is Small Business Month in British Columbia. Proclaimed by Premier Gordon
Campbell for the first time in 2007, Small Business Month recognizes and
celebrates the valuable contribution small businesses in all regions make to
British Columbia’s growing economy.
