VANCOUVER
– The Boards of the BC Pavilion
Corporation (PAVCO) and the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project
(VCCEP) will be merged to maximize their effectiveness as they enter into the
marketing and operating phase of the expanded convention centre.
The
two boards will be joined to allow for better coordination between these
organizations whose primary role is to oversee the marketing of the facilities
that they manage.
David
Podmore, CEO of Concert Properties, and Derek Brindle, lawyer with Singleton
Urquardt, will join the boards of VCCEP and PAVCO. David Podmore will serve as
chair of the merged board.
Podmore
has more than 33 years in the real estate development industry and is president
and chief executive officer of Concert Properties Ltd. He is vice chair of the
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Foundation; the immediate past
president of the Urban Development Institute of BC (Pacific Region), a past
member of the BC Progress Board, immediate past chair of the BC Children’s
Hospital Foundation and was a director of the Canadian Tourism Commission for
eight years. He is the first recipient
of the Award of Excellence established by The Real Estate Institute of BC, and
received the 2003 Community Service Award from Volunteer Vancouver.
The
1.1 million square foot convention centre expansion will triple existing
capacity allowing Vancouver to attract large conferences and to compete with
facilities in North America and around the World. Through 2011 the expanded
convention centre has already booked 50 conferences, 27 of these are coming
because they can now be accommodated here. This will be the greenest convention
facility on the continent and it will generate $854 million in new delegate
spending by 2011.
