Carey Newman is a 32-year-old Coast Salish/Kwagiulth artist who comes from a long line of renowned wood carvers that includes his father, Victor Newman, great, great grandfather Charlie James and great aunt Ellen Neel. His mother, Edith, is a textile artist and clothing designer.
With over 20 years’ experience in carving and other fine arts, Newman is prominent among the younger generation of Aboriginal artists in B.C. Newman’s media of choice are wood, gold, silver, gems, glass and paint. Born of both Kwagiulth/Coast Salish and British descent, Newman draws upon each of these cultures for his inspiration.
In 1996, Newman opened an art gallery that features his work as well as that of his parents.
Most of Newman’s carvings are commissioned by private collectors; however, he has also created work for corporations, government agencies and museums around the world.
Newman’s involvement with the cultural community extends to the performance arts. Newman studied piano at the University of Victoria and voice at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, winning several awards in both piano and voice at the Greater Victoria Music Festival. He performs solo roles with Pacific Opera Victoria.
Newman is looking forward to the Cowichan 2008 Spirit Pole tour as an opportunity to bring people together and promote cultural awareness.
