PEDESTRIANS, CYCLISTS BENEFIT FROM FUNDING FOR BRIDGE

PITT MEADOWS – The Province is investing $180,000 in LocalMotion funding toward building a pedestrian/cycling bridge over Katzie Slough, supporting a greener, healthier Pitt Meadows, announced Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Randy Hawes on behalf of Community Development Minister Blair Lekstrom.

“This LocalMotion funding will help get local residents out of their cars, providing them with better outdoor recreation options, improving their health and air quality,” said Hawes. “It will also assist with the provincial goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020.”

The new bridge will be located over the Katzie Slough south of the Lougheed Highway, enhancing safety as pedestrians and cyclists will no longer need to use the highway shoulder. The new bridge will also increase the opportunity for residents to make walking or cycling as part of their daily life.

“We are pleased to be able to work towards an alternative for our residents so that they have the option of choosing to walk or cycle without having to use the highway,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean. “Cost-sharing on this new bridge makes it possible to work towards completion sooner than would otherwise be possible.”

LocalMotion is investing $40 million over four years in capital projects that build bike paths, walkways and greenways and build seniors-friendly and disability-friendly communities. LocalMotion funds are also available for projects that support community playgrounds and children’s parks activities. The program provides local governments up to 50 per cent funding for approved projects up to a maximum provincial contribution of $1 million.

Today’s funding builds on other provincial supports for the community, including $500,000 in B.C. Spirit Squares funding, plus more than $1.5 million in small community grants and traffic fine revenue sharing since 2004.
