$12.5 MILLION TO CREATE 2,200 CHILD-CARE SPACES

B.C.’s Child-Care Capital Funding Program helps communities create new licensed child-care spaces to help meet the needs of B.C. families. A 12-member review panel, with representation from each region of the province, assessed applications based on financial viability; long-term sustainability of the proposed spaces; community needs assessments; and community support.

·       2,200 licensed spaces are expected to open by 2010.

·       114 projects in 60 B.C. communities are receiving major capital child-care funding:

o     68 group child-care centres;

o     43 family child-care centres; and

o     three previously announced child-care centres located alongside social housing developments, [News Release: http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2005-2009/2008CFD0002-000091.htm]

·       38 of these projects will locate in vacant space in schools and public buildings.

·       10 of these projects will create or expand neighbourhood hubs.
