VICTORIA – The Province is providing a record $47 million in small community and regional district grants this year to local governments across B.C., Community Services Minister Ida Chong announced.
“We recognize that smaller municipalities and regional districts often need a bit of extra support to make their communities even better places to live and work,” said Chong. “This funding is the third step in fulfilling the Premier’s commitment to double the unconditional grants to municipalities and regional districts by 2009, further helping support communities in providing services for residents.”
The unconditional grants are:
Small Community Grants: Almost $43.5 million for small and medium-sized municipalities to fund local and basic services. The grant allocation is based on a formula with three elements: basic funding for all municipalities with a population of less than 15,000; population-based funding; and property assessment-based funding.
Regional District Grants: More than $3.7 million to 28 regional districts, including B.C.’s two newest regional districts, Comox Valley ($136,000) and Strathcona ($162,000), which came into being Feb. 15, 2008.
The Small Community and Regional District Grants are part of a series of programs available to local governments to help provide services and infrastructure. These programs include LocalMotion, Towns for Tomorrow, B.C. Spirit Squares, the Green City Awards and the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program.
