MEADOWBROOK ELEMENTARY GETS SEISMICALLY SAFE GYMNASIUM

COQUITLAM – The Province has approved more than $300,000 for the seismic upgrade of the gymnasium at Meadowbrook elementary, Port Moody-Westwood MLA Iain Black announced today.

“Upgrading Meadowbrook’s gym will ensure that students and staff in our community have a safer school environment,” said Black. “I’m pleased the school district can now move forward with these seismic upgrades.”

Construction will begin late in the spring and be finished before school resumes this September.

“It’s important to upgrade the gymnasium at this time,” said Coquitlam board of education chair Holly Butterfield. “Safety is number one in our school district and we are pleased to work with the ministry on seismic upgrades to ensure that our schools are safer.”

“Ensuring schools receive seismic upgrades is a top priority for this government,” said Education Minister Shirley Bond.  “This project is a good example of how our government is working closely with school districts to provide safer places for students and staff to learn and work.”

Since 2001, the Province has invested over $46.5 million in nine school construction projects in the Coquitlam school district, including upgrades, additions, and new schools.

During the same period the Province has spent more than $1.3 billion to complete 26 new schools, 41 replacement schools, 147 additions, 25 renovations and 20 site acquisitions across British Columbia. By the end of 2008-09, government will have invested more than $3.1 billion in school capital and maintenance projects across B.C.
