PRINCE GEORGE – Education Minister Shirley Bond today presented student organizers at D.P. Todd secondary with a cheque for almost $10,000 to support the 4th annual Prince George Regional Leadership Conference.
“Prince George should be proud of the students who are organizing this leadership conference,” said Bond. “These students are already leaders in their school and community, and they will soon be able to share their leadership strengths with students from around the province and set an example for others to follow.”
The grant will provide funding support for students in the D.P. Todd Leadership program who are organizing the conference. The Prince George Regional Leadership Conference is completely organized and run by students, who will be co-ordinating set-up, accommodation, meals, presentations, graphics, hosting and audio visual presentations.
“This year’s conference, Passing the T.O.R.C.H., is about teaching
students to bring responsibility, compassion and honour to their schools,” said
Don Homan, head of D.P. Todd secondary’s Leadership program. “These students
have worked very hard to improve the school communities across the region and
it’s great to see the ministry acknowledging that work.”
The conference is being held May 5-6, 2008 at UNBC. Up to 250 secondary and elementary students and advisors will be attending the conference from Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, Mackenzie, Chetwynd, Fraser Lake, Houston, Nechako Valley, Vanderhoof and Prince George to learn about subjects ranging from student inclusion and citizenship to removing the pecking order in student relationships.
The B.C. government works to develop student leadership both locally and through provincial programs such as the annual Student Congress, the Interactive Innovations conference and the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association’s Student Voice program. The second annual Student Congress is hosting students from across the province in Vancouver on April 4, 2008. Student applications to attend the Congress may be submitted online at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/asc/ and must be received by Feb. 22, 2008.
