THE ‘GO BEYOND’ PROJECT

B.C. Campus Climate Network

Formed in July 2007, the B.C. Campus Climate Network works with educational institutions and students to encourage them to not only become climate neutral, but also to do more to solve the problems of climate change through education, research and other learning and teaching methods. The network connects students, staff, faculty and administrators working on climate change and sustainability initiatives at universities, colleges and high schools across British Columbia.

The network’s primary project partners are UBC’s Sustainability Office, Common Energy and the Sierra Youth Coalition.

The Four Pillars of the ‘Go Beyond’ Project

The ‘Go Beyond’ project will engage thousands of students across the province to educate them about the science and solutions for climate change in B.C., inspiring them to make carbon-smart lifestyle choices that reduce GHG emissions and that create larger climate solutions.

Through a collaborative planning process, student leaders and campus groups identified four pillars of climate action on campuses that form the basis of the ‘Go Beyond’ project:

  • Go Beyond Challenges – offering adaptable projects for campus organizations that want to reduce GHG emissions while engaging their community.
  • Transformative Education – working to establish curriculum that is engaging, community-oriented and creates regional climate change solutions.
  • Beyond Climate-neutral Planning – creating space for youth to lead their institutions in collaboratively planning a low-carbon future.
  • Training and Capacity Building – increasing the ability of students and youth organizations by providing skills training, accessible toolkits and mentorship.

The project will support youth groups in implementing initiatives to change behaviour and help create climate solutions, as well as work with universities, colleges and other post-secondary institutions to develop climate action-related curricula and other course materials.
