LANGLEY – Provincial and
community partners gathered today to celebrate the official opening of Langley
Seniors Village, a new 120-unit housing development for seniors in the growing Township of Langley.
“These apartments ensure
seniors can enjoy the sense of community that Langley offers,” said Minister
responsible for Housing Rich Coleman. “The Province is providing seniors with
safe homes, assistance and support when it is needed.”
Out of the 120 units at Langley
Seniors Village, 64 are funded under Independent Living BC, a provincial
program that offers a middle option between home
care and residential care. Assisted living units are self-contained
apartments where tenants receive a range of hospitality services, including
meals, housekeeping, laundry, personal care services and medication assistance.
“Our government
is committed to providing affordable housing solutions that make sense for
seniors,” said Langley MLA Mary Polak. “Langley Seniors Village will allow
seniors to maintain their independence while living close to family and
friends, with convenient access to support and personal care services.”
Fraser Health will fund personal care services and part of the hospitality services provided to residents.
“The goal of assisted living and developments like this is to promote greater independence and support long-term care needs,” said Nigel Murray, president and CEO of Fraser Health. “Langley Seniors Village is an important part of our overall strategy to provide different combinations of housing and personal care for seniors in Langley and throughout the Fraser Health area.”
“Seniors are a vibrant and active part of Langley, and the community welcomes a development such as Langley Seniors Village, as it provides an excellent housing alternative,” said Township of Langley Mayor Kurt Alberts.
Langley Seniors Village is owned and operated by Retirement Concepts Seniors’ Services Ltd., an established provider for seniors’ housing in British Columbia and Quebec. The development provides a range of quality housing services and care options for seniors in a warm, home-like environment.
“Langley Seniors
Village will provide this community with 120 new homes for its older citizens,”
said Azim Jamal, president and CEO of Retirement Concepts. “The development is an innovative and progressive model of
housing and care and we’re pleased to welcome its new residents.”
The 64 new
Independent Living BC units are part of the Province’s commitment to provide
5,000 net-new residential care beds, assisted living units, and supportive
housing with home support units by the end of 2008. To date, 9,214 new
and replacement beds and units have been built, including 3,677 net-new
beds. In addition, there are 2,797
beds/units under construction.
The
Province is committed to providing more than 4,000 affordable assisted living
apartments for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities. To date, more than
3,900 have been allocated in communities across the province. Through the provincial housing strategy,
Housing Matters BC, the Province is investing $360 million in shelters and
affordable housing this year, three times as much as in 2001.
