POWELL RIVER – The Powell River Kiwanis Village Society will
be able to upgrade about 43 seniors’ housing units and introduce new support
services at its development on Kiwanis Avenue, Minister responsible for Housing
Rich Coleman announced today.
“Kiwanis Village is an important seniors’ community for Powell River,
and it’s going to be even better as a result of these improvements under the
Seniors’ Supportive Housing program,” said Coleman. “This program will help
local seniors to remain independent and stay in their homes and community
longer.”
The Powell River Kiwanis Village Society’s Kiwanis Village is one of ten developments with approximately 330 units receiving funding as a result of a proposal call issued in 2007. The capital cost of upgrading the units is estimated at about $13 million, with specific budgets for the work at each development still being negotiated. The upgrades are estimated to be complete by March 2009.
The Seniors’ Supportive Housing program modifies rental homes for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Seniors’ Supportive Housing tenants pay rent as determined by their tenancy agreement and 20 per cent of their gross household income for support services, which may include 24-hour response, light housekeeping, meals, and social and recreational activities. In total more than 900 units in 22 developments will be upgraded or managed under the program.
The government has exceeded its
Budget 2007 Seniors’ Supportive Housing program commitment to upgrade or
convert up to 750
subsidized housing units to supportive housing. Through the provincial housing strategy,
Housing Matters BC, the Province is investing more than $380 million in
shelters and affordable housing this year, more than three times as much as in
2001.
