KAMLOOPS – The Province, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), has identified a site for a temporary rooming house for women in Kamloops.
The rooming house will help to replace eight shelter beds at the House of Ruth, operated by the New Life Mission society. New Life Mission is discontinuing its shelter operation on June 30.
“I’d like to thank the staff at the House of Ruth for the important service they have provided over the past years,” said Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger. “Our priority is to ensure women and children at risk of homelessness in Kamloops continue to have access to safe and secure accommodation, and we’ll be able to do that with the CMHA and the AIDS Society.”
The rooming house, which will be operated by CMHA Kamloops, will provide eight spaces for women and children. CMHA, in partnership with the AIDS Society of Kamloops, will make arrangements to provide access to support services.
“Every effort is being made to open the rooming house by July 1,” said Doug Sage, executive director of CMHA Kamloops. “Together with the AIDS Society of Kamloops, we are committed to making sure the rooming house will be a safe and welcoming place for those who need it.”
The rooming house will operate until a permanent location is identified in Kamloops for a new emergency shelter for women.
Budget 2008 increased the amount the Province invests in affordable housing and shelters to more than $380 million a year, more than three times as much as in 2001.
