PROVINCE FUNDS SENIORS’ SUPPORTIVE HOUSING IN SIDNEY

SIDNEY – The Province’s $1.1-million investment in the renovation of Wakefield Manor has resulted in the opening of 24 units of seniors’ supportive housing in Sidney, the first on Vancouver Island.

“The renovations at Wakefield Manor allow seniors to continue to enjoy the Sidney lifestyle, with enhanced accessibility and improved safety features in their homes,” said Murray Coell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. “The program is helping preserve seniors’ independence in communities around British Columbia.”

The Seniors’ Supportive Housing program modifies housing developments for low-income seniors and people with disabilities by making physical improvements to the building such as bathroom grab bars, improved lighting in common areas, and other security and safety features. The program also introduces on-site support services, which may include 24-hour response, light housekeeping, meals, and social and recreational activities.

“The Seniors’ Supportive Housing program has upgraded this development to make apartment style living easier and more affordable for local seniors, said Don Amos, mayor of Sidney. “Wakefield Manor gives seniors the support and services they need to maintain their independence.”

“There is a need for more affordable housing and different levels of care options for seniors all across the province, including right here in Sidney,” said Isobel Mackenzie, executive director of Beacon Community Services, who will continue to manage and operate Wakefield Manor. “We're pleased that we can offer our seniors the opportunity to remain in the community close to family and friends as their care needs change.”

The Province has exceeded its Budget 2007 Seniors’ Supportive Housing program commitment to upgrade or convert up to 750 subsidized housing units to supportive housing. Budget 2008 increased the amount the Province invests in affordable housing and shelters to more than $380 million a year, more than three times as much as in 2001.
