PROVINCE INVESTS $150,000 TO IMPROVE HILLCREST ROAD

VICTORIA – The Province is investing $150,000 this year to improve the safety of the Hill 60 Forest Service Road (Hillcrest Road) near Duncan, Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell announced today.

“We’re meeting our commitment to improve the safety of all forest service roads in B.C.,” said Bell. “This upgrade will substantially improve the surface of the road, making it safer for local residents and those who enjoy the Chemainus River Park.”

The Hill 60 Forest Service Road is commonly known as Hillcrest Road, and branches off Highway 18, west of Duncan, on the highway to Lake Cowichan. The 5.5-kilometre gravel road provides access to the Chemainus River Park and four residences. The Chemainus River Park is a popular recreational destination for those living in the Duncan area, as well as tourists.

Road improvements this year will focus on the first 2.5 kilometres, where the residences are. This section of road will have the entire road prism reconstructed including the removal of large cobbles and boulders. The road and ditchlines will then be reshaped, to allow for improved water control and to facilitate future road grading. The running surface will then be replaced with a new layer of compacted crushed gravel.

Road upgrade work began on Sept. 25 and is expected to be complete next week. Short delays of up to one-half hour are possible; however, one-lane traffic will be available to maintain access during this project.
