While many of the 220 new doctors are general practitioners, they also include doctors with specialties in anesthesia, psychiatry, internal medicine, orthopedics and gynecology. In addition to the new doctors, 29 highly trained nurse practitioners have also been recruited. Of the total number of doctors, 62 have been recruited by Providence Health Care and 158 by Vancouver Coastal Health.
“Our government is committed to increasing the number of health professionals in our communities to help address the growing pressures of population growth, an aging society and chronic disease,” said Abbott. “Our provincewide initiatives with the BC Medical Association, such as Family Physicians for BC and our programs for rural physicians, as well as Health Match BC and the International Medical Graduate program, are helping to bring physicians to areas where they are needed.”
