VICTORIA – The Ministry of Labour and Citizens’
Services is focusing its efforts during national Emergency Preparedness Week
with an earthquake exercise and building evacuation
at 4000 Seymour Place on Wednesday, May 7.
The drill will test various aspects of the
building’s emergency program and involve ministry staff who are part of various
response groups: damage assessment; emergency wardens, first aid; and light
urban search and rescue. Personnel from St. John's Ambulance and the Saanich
Emergency Program will also be attending.
The full building evacuation will be from
11:00 to 11:40 a.m. and will involve approximately 700 employees. Other activities,
including search and rescue exercises, will take place during the
afternoon.
Emergency Preparedness Week is held annually during the first week of May and helps individuals and organizations increase awareness about preparedness and reinforce the idea that individuals can reduce the risks and lessen the consequences of a disaster through better preparation. Government’s office at 4000 Seymour Place houses information technology corporate groups and infrastructure.

Media note: A public affairs officer will be available at the exercise command post at the south side of the parking lot across from 4000 Seymour main entrance shortly before 11 a.m. to assist media during the drill activity.
