SURREY – Surrey will expand its public space for community gatherings, special events, and celebrations like the Province’s 150th anniversary with a Spirit Square in Holland Park, Premier Gordon Campbell said today, announcing $500,000 in provincial support for the project.
“This Square enhances what was Surrey’s first urban park, in a location with pathways radiating out to the community and links to nearby transit,” Premier Campbell said. “This Spirit Square will be a great place for families to gather to enjoy community art, gardens and seasonal events and celebrate events like BC150.”
Holland Park is the southern anchor of the city centre, which is undergoing extensive renovations. The Spirit Square will include a stage to hold public performances and will expand the park’s plaza area by almost 16,000 square feet, creating a venue capable of hosting events of up to 1,500 people.
“As Surrey’s City Centre continues
to transform into an urban downtown core, the Holland Park Spirit Square will
optimize our vision for a safe, welcoming place for our residents to gather and
socialize,” said Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “We’ve put a lot of work into revitalizing
this park, and the Spirit Square will make it even more walkable and inviting.”
The $20-million B.C. Spirit Square program is helping to create or improve outdoor public meeting/celebration spaces based on 50/50 cost-sharing with local governments, to a maximum provincial contribution of $500,000. This year, B.C. will celebrate BC150, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.’s cultural diversity, community strength and achievement. To learn more about BC150, please visit www.bc150.ca.
