VICTORIA – BC Public Service employees from across Vancouver Island were recognized by Premier Gordon Campbell last night for their outstanding achievements in implementing innovative programs and improving the lives of British Columbians.
“All British Columbians benefit from the tireless work of dedicated provincial employees who consistently bring innovation to the broad range of services they undertake,” said Campbell as he participated in the last of four regional Premier’s Innovation and Excellence Awards events. “In celebrating the work of the more than 14,000 Vancouver Island public servants, we honour the consistently exceptional service they provide to communities.”
One individual and a team of nine from the Ministry of Environment received the highest level of recognition, the Gold Premier’s Award for Excellence and Innovation, as part of the regional 2008 competition.
The gold award recipients for Vancouver Island are Dr. Richard Bennett, and the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Program.
Dr. Bennett has made an exceptional and lasting contribution to the Province through his 30 years of work in the field of air quality management. He is recognized as an international expert, having developed and mentored one of Canada’s leading provincial air quality programs.
The Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery program has delivered a strong message of community involvement with an innovative national education and information program about the endangered animal. This outreach program was so successful that public involvement now surpasses government and industry support.
The two gold level recipients were selected out of 67 nominations in the Vancouver Island region. Two nominees received silver awards and four nominees picked up bronze awards at the ceremony, the last of four regional awards events to take place by the end of February. The provincial level awards will be announced at a ceremony in Victoria in March.
The annual awards represent the BC
Public Service’s pinnacle recognition event to highlight and acknowledge Cross-Government
Integration, Innovation, Leadership, Legacy, Organizational Excellence,
Partnership, and Service Excellence across the province.
The BC Public Service is the province’s largest corporate employer and recently selected as one of B.C.’s Top 40 Employers. To learn more about the opportunities available in the BC Public Service, visit http://employment.gov.bc.ca/ online.
