SEOUL – Alumni of B.C. post-secondary institutions living in Korea have been invited by Premier Gordon Campbell to become Ambassadors for British Columbia as part of the BC Alumni Ambassador Network, helping to further strengthen social, cultural and economic ties between B.C. and Korea.
Premier Campbell launched the Korean chapter of the BC Alumni Ambassador
Network at an event in Seoul today. Through the network, BC Alumni Ambassadors
will have opportunities to connect with Premier Campbell, other members of
government and each other.
“We want to reach out to B.C. alumni in Korea and
reconnect them with the province in order to make long-term connections that
will benefit all of us,” said Premier Campbell. “These types of groups are an
important portal into Asia and help us forge lasting and sophisticated
economic, cultural and social relationships around the globe.”
Korea has been the top source of international
students to British Columbia since 1998. There were about 14,000 Korean
students studying at B.C. primary and post-secondary institutions over the
2006/07 school year.
The BC Alumni Ambassador Network
engages B.C.’s expatriates and, in particular, graduates of B.C.’s
post-secondary institutions living and working in Asia to help foster business
and social connections. The BC Alumni
Ambassador Network’s inaugural launch took place on Nov. 30, 2007 in Hong Kong,
and the program is now being rolled out across the Asia Pacific.
“Our B.C. Alumni help us understand how we can create strong relationships and good business connections in Asia,” said Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen. “We believe B.C.’s cultural ties and economic connections to Korea provide us with immeasurable opportunities.”
B.C. alumni were contacted in partnership with British Columbia’s public
post-secondary institutions. Alumni of B.C. interested in learning more about
the program can visit www.bcalumni.ca,
where they can register as a BC Alumni Ambassador. The BC Alumni Ambassadors
Network is initially focused on the Asia Pacific but may expand to other
countries in the future.
